Li Ion Battery Packs -- What are They?

When people start talking about lithium ion batteries you will hear them talking about battery packs. The reason for this is because the li-ion battery is only sold as a pack of batteries instead of individual batteries like the old alkaline.

A li-ion battery pack typically has a series of battery cells in it that work together to create a charge for the battery. This is true in the case of the lithium ion battery packs because they have several cells for the convenience and for safety. Lithium can be an unstable metal to work with and having more than one cell can make the full battery more stable.

Another feature of the lithium ion battery pack is that it doesn't have what is called a "memory effect". This means that you are always recharging it from where the charge left off instead of having to charge it from the beginning each time. This allows the battery pack to last longer. Since they last longer, they are a better choice for any handheld and portable electronic device that you may purchase.

Lithium ion battery packs are also created for safety. In all of these batteries there is circuitry that has to be constructed in such away that it monitors the type of voltage and the amount of voltage that goes to the battery cell. In this way, if there is an overcharge or undercharge, the circuitry will pick this information up and rearrange the current so that it stays consistent throughout the entire battery pack.

When you purchase a lithium ion battery pack it will be designed for your specific device but there are a variety of these available. As an example, these types of batteries come in a standard pack that works well for the typical handheld or other electronic device and a large capacity battery pack that is for larger jobs.

One of the things that you will want to be careful about in purchasing a lithium ion battery pack is that you always go with a name brand company. The reason for this is that the counterfeit ones have been proven to be unsafe. They can leak, overheat and catch on fire, or damage your machine. There is no recourse for you if you get one of these usually because the companies are sometimes bogus.  With name brand like Axion, Sony, Panasonic and others you can be sure you are getting a quality product.

Some people wonder why they should use a lithium ion battery pack instead of a regular one. The basic reason is because the standard battery pack will not last as long as the lithium even when they are rechargeable.
